Try Wait

Try Wait is an effort to reverse the declines we observed,

so that we can manage from a place of abundance, rather than depletion.

Today we sacrifice, so that the future generations can be fed.

KMLAC has been monitoring the health of our fishery for decades, through our community monitoring program and support from our partners.

The monitoring program allows us to track how the fishery is recovering during the Try Wait rest period.

Outreach and Education

Enforcement

KMLAC holds regular Makai Watch trainings, in partnership with the State Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement (DOCARE), to train our staff and community members on the current regulations, and how to report any violation’s observed.

Restoration

We mālama the kai in many ways, through active restoration of our corals that were impacted from recent bleaching events, to removing non-native fish with our hui. We also perpetuate our traditional practices, including teaching the practice of hana paʻa kai to our keiki, and sharing moʻolelo to keep our stories alive.
